Barbara Eden

Saturday my pretty lady and I along with our BFF’s from northern Kentucky attended Lexington’s Comic Con. This was the first comic con for all four of us. My pretty lady wanted to meet Priscilla Presley who was taking pictures with fans and signing autographs. Priscilla also did a Q and A with fans which was really good!

Lexington’s Comic-Con was an unforgettable experience. There were thousands of enthusiastic attendees, many of who were dressed in very creative and intricate costumes. The people-watching was the best I have participated in. And the line of celebrity appearances was nothing short of impressive. Everyone from Shannon Doherty to James Van Der Beek to Ice from American Gladiators. I learned later that day that Shannon Doherty has stage 4 cancer. I admire her for pushing through the pain she may be feeling and finding the strength to meet with fans.

I learned about a week prior that the iconic Barbara Eden from “I Dream of Jeanie” was going to be comic con. She was my childhood crush and the anticipation of possibly getting a glimpse of her in person was building. I did not pay to get a picture or autograph and I totally regret it. We did attend the Q and A session and of course, I was in total awe. She is 92 now, a timeless beauty with a vivacious spirit. She stood during the session the entire time in heels!

Now for the back story of why I love Barbara Eden. Watching her on "I Dream of Jeannie" in the early 80s was not just an entertainer to me she was a language teacher who helped me learn English. I was learning English at school before regular classes started which was beneficial. However, it was when I got home from school in the afternoon and watched I Dream Jeannie that helped me. I was able to observe and listen to adults communicate and pick up on expressions. I have to admit that on Saturday I realized that the episodes I was watching were all reruns. I had no clue that “I Dream of Jeannie” originally aired in the 60’s.

During the Q and A, I wanted so badly to stand up and say “Thank you for helping me learn English." I guess I was a little star-struck watching her up on stage. I also wanted to ask what her secret was to aging gracefully.  Barbara defies age with grace and style, a true living legend who radiates elegance and charm.

Age is just a number! Barbara’s enduring appeal is a nice reminder that true beauty comes from within and can shine brightly at any stage of life.
