Beyond the Sun REVIEW
January 6, 2024
My full review of Beyond the Sun on Bardstown Road in Louisville is here!
I had reservations for 5:45 PM and was shocked that the only tables upstairs available were very small tables only big enough for two drinks. I don’t see how, water, cocktails, and entrees with side dishes would fit on their tiny tables. The two regular-sized tables upstairs were unoccupied but we were not permitted to sit there. So downstairs it was for us! Warning on the single-user restroom: there is no sign on the door making it difficult to find and ladies with handbags it’s important to know there’s no hook inside!
I was disappointed in the old-fashioned I ordered as there was barely any bourbon in it. I ordered two additional drinks which were bourbon on the rocks. I recommend not ordering bourbon on the rocks because there are all rocks and no bourbon.
What was peculiar about placing our drink orders was that I had to ask for their whiskey menu every time. Then the server kept coming back and said the bourbon I wanted was only available upstairs and not downstairs. 🤔 I’m guessing servers are not allowed to go upstairs for those bourbons.
I paid $29 for an Angus strip top sirloin steak medium rare. It was medium rare just the way I like it but the steak was tough and not a sirloin. I have consumed a lot of red meat in my time to know what steak I am eating. This piece of meat was a top-round round steak.
My lady’s tater tots came out semi-warm but they were tasty enough for her to gobble up quickly. The cheese sauce was good and she was glad there was enough to add to her fajitas and other side dish. My seasonal vegetables were spongy. Pretty obvious they were frozen vegetables in a bag.
Honestly, this place looked more like a strip club than a high-priced restaurant. The website claims to have the best DJs or live music bands. The bartenders had no clue if their saxophone player was going to show up or not at 8 PM. Our server was outstanding. She gave us her greatest attention. I believe with proper training she will be even better!
Something else that bugged me, Beyond the Sun uses black glasses for water. I do not recommend restaurants using black acrylic glasses as servers have to continuously ask if water needs a refill rather than just seeing that a refill is needed. Also, it's hard to judge the cleanliness of the black glasses in such a dark restaurant.
Overall our dishes failed to leave a lasting impression and our experience was short of expectations for the price point.
